NET/JRF in Political Science

Political Science is one of the most competitive and dynamic subject in the UGC NET exam. With the change in the scheme w.e.f June 2012 and the following hiatus about the cut offs and the result; Now the ugc is determined to make the exam more challenging and competitive. It can be gauged from previous year papers that there has been a kind of sea change in the areas of the question- they are now focusing on all the areas of the syllabus in indepth and comprehensive manner (specially paper III). I will provide a detail analysis of the previous papers in the upcoming posts.

After saying all these, what remain the fact is it is not an "invincible demon" ; it can be cleared easily if we follow certain basics things. What are they?

  • Focus, polish and sharpen your basic knowledge. e.g. you should not miss a question like- who said "poverty is a theft" or " Society is association of association"
  • Make a flow chart about all the thinkers, world constitution etc. How to make a chart I will discuss it in upcoming posts.
  • Daily gauged at the Contents of the book on constitution by PM Bakshi for atleast 1/2 an hours.
  • Look around for every detail about the topic that is asked in the paper since June 2012. That would cover 20% of the syllabus.
  • Lastly revised daily and do mock. Which I will provide.
What you should no do:

  • Lackadaisical attitude towards the basics; as you assume that you know everything (because you have done MA)
  • Reading only not making note or revising or practicing.
  • Ignoring the first paper. Good marks in this paper increases your chance.
N.B : Atleast three months commitment is needed for clearing the exam (3 hrs daily).

Now a pertinent question is which books to refer. Here is the list:
  1. Introduction to political theory by OP Gauba
  2. Poltical thinker Ramaswamy and Mukherjee & IDOL.
  3. Indian Political Thought VR Mehta
  4. Indian Polity by Laxmikant
  5. Indian constitution by PM Bakshi (just for reference to Articles)
  6. International Relations by Manohar Pandey or KK ghai anyone will do.
  7. Public Administration- IDOL materials, Ignou or Laxmikant
  8. Read one national News paper.
**SL No.1,2,4,6 are vital... Must be read thoroughly. Next post would be on "How to Memorise the article and which article"
